Introduction

The simple meaning of taxonomy is "classification". Bloom's Taxonomy is a classification of educational learning objectives proposed in 1956 by a committee of educators chaired by Benjamin Bloom. Who is Benjamin Bloom? He taught educational psychology in America. He was a well educated individual that made significant contributions to the educational objectives as well as the theory of mastery-learning. There have been several changes made to Bloom's Taxonomy, creating the revised taxonomy and the digital taxonomy.

At this level students will be able to explain why and examine ideas and concepts by separating them into their component parts. After the separation the student can clarify the organization of the entire problem and look at it from a global perspective. Students will explain the logical connections of the separate parts and develop a cause and effect sequence. Students will be able to explain why they worked the problem in that fashion and include a discussion as to why their solution methods would work. Teachers can probe, guide, and observe at this level making sure the student can answer questions correctly at the analysis level with documentation that includes discussions. The depth of the discussions distinguishes Analysis level work from the other levels.

At this level the student will be able to use concepts, theories, and general solution methods on their own and without the use of context clues. Students will also know and comprehend those same concepts and ideas and apply them to new situations. Through critical thinking the student will solve problems where the solutions are not readily clear.

The teacher reviews the student’s work and determined whether the student is solving problems independently without being prompted. By asking general questions the student should know how to answer. Teachers asks the student to solve problems that relate to another subject.  By solving these questions with the concepts and laws that the student is supposed to know, the students demonstrates their knowledge of the content area.

Creating Online

The final step in Bloom's Taxonomy of cognitive development is Creating. Within this domain the learner is expected to use all knowledge learned to change, combine, compose, create, and even invent something. The final product of this domain in an online learning environment could be to have the student create his or her own comic strip using an online tool such as http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/Comix/.

Students can also create all types of multimedia presentations in this domain to satisfy the classification of Creating.

Evaluating Online

The new, updated Bloom's Taxonomy of cognitive development includes an evaluation portion. In a traditional classroom this part would resemble activities or assignments requiring the learners to critique, judge, justify, and support a position or idea. In an online learning system this part of Bloom's taxonomy is also completed through the same activities. End products that resemble Bloom's Taxonomy in relation to the evaluating stage would be a report, a self-evaluation, and even a recommendation.

In the classroom this would resemble a book report for a younger student, making sure the student utilizes the proper writing techniques including set-up, grammar, and all stages of the writing process. This is an activity that can be completed in a traditional or non-traditional classroom.
